After the baseball game Friday we were pretty tired, so Saturday ended up being our day to just hang out inside. Sunday ended up being very rainy, but we tried going downtown anyway. We had lunch at a noodle place that was pretty good for a place that, I think, usually serves the late night crowd. We bummed around a while and looked in a few shops, but the rain just wouldn't let up. We got some bubble tea and sat in a coffee place for a little bit when we had the idea to look for a DVD bang. DVD bangs are DVD rooms where people go to rent and watch movies. We paid 14,000 won to watch one movie. I guess you pay for the about how long it takes to watch one movie per person. Either that or you pay a flat rate per movie per person. Korea has a lot of places like this: PC bangs, Video game bangs, etc. We found one very close to the coffee shop we were at, but it ended up being full. We then spent at least twenty minutes walking around and looking for more DVD bang signs. Finally, after three or four failed attempts, we found an place and watched Shakespeare in Love. The rooms was pretty big with a projector and big sound system. It seems like a good alternative to going to a movie theater. After the movie, we hoped on the green line and met our friends Serena and Max for dinner at an Indian restaurant near their house. The food was very good, although a little expensive. Overall, it was a very relaxing weekend.
I was a bit upset because of the rain Sunday. We were planning on going to the Suseong Lake Festival in Daegu for the fireworks at the closing ceremony for the festival. Still, the DVD bang was awesome. When we were looking for a place, we followed a Korean couple who were also looking for one. We figured they would point us in the right direction. I'm pretty sure they realized we were following them. Woops! The DVD bangs have a really good selection of movies, especially English movies. Captioning here is really nice because it's not actually over the image; it's right below it on a black area of the screen. It's much less distracting than at home. I assume that all the English movies had Korean captioning like ours did. Gianni forgot to mention that our room had a HUGE couch! It was massive and in an ornate pattern. It was awesome! But couples definitely use these rooms for more than just a movie. There's no doubt in my mind on that point. Whatever. It's still pretty awesome to just be able to go there to watch a movie, especially since our internet is sometimes really crappy for streaming netflix.
It was really nice to see Serena and Max outside of taekwondo. They're really great people. The Indian food was excellent, but, again, more spicy than at home. We went to a place called Maya, which people have been telling me about. Turns out, Serena and Max have one right near their house. We got some tandori chicken and naan. I don't think it was expensive really. We got a ton of food. It was one of their dinner sets, so it came with soup, chicken, naan, and rice. Delicious. After dinner, we went back to Max and Serena's apartment in one of the many high-rise apartment buildings in Daegu. Man was there apartment gigantic! They had an entry way with storage, a real kitchen with an island, and a massive living room with tons of windows! Compared to my living/dining/bedroom/study area, I wish I could get that kind of an upgrade! We spent some time chatting at their place, drinking wine, and then it was time to go home before the train closed. It was a pretty great weekend.
